The appropriate treatment depends on the insect, the location of the damage, the condition of the logs, and whether the problem is active. A careful plan usually begins with a full exterior review, including lower courses of logs, wall intersections, rooflines, window and door openings, decks, railings, and exposed log ends.
Confirm the extent of the damage
A visual inspection can reveal staining, frass, holes, checks, failed chinking, and areas where logs feel soft. In some cases, probing suspect wood helps determine whether damage is limited to the surface or extends deeper into the log. The goal is not to disturb sound wood unnecessarily. It is to understand whether a log can be repaired, consolidated, or needs partial or full replacement.
